Battersea Dogs Eat 50 Tonnes of Food

28 April 2014

UK - Staff at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home used a staggering 42,384 tins of wet food and 28,672kg of dry dog food to feed more than 5,000 dogs last year.

Battersea’s moggies took the lion’s share with more than 3,000 cats eating their way through 58,944 pouches of cat food and 1,264kg of cat biscuits.

All the food used at Battersea is donated by pet food suppliers Pedigree and Whiskas.

To manage this large intake of food Battersea staff and volunteers also used 134,00 dog waste bags and 152,940 litres of cat litter, donated by pet healthcare providers Bob Martin.

The huge shopping list was essential to help Battersea care for every one of the 13 dogs and 8 cats that arrived at the rescue centre every day in 2013. The Home receives on average 1,000 calls a month from owners seeking help with pets they can no longer care for or afford, and a further 2128 dogs and 1323 cats arrived last year as strays, found tied up or wandering the streets.

With around 180 dogs on site at its iconic London centre at any one time Battersea is now seeking to raise £1.9m to help it build vital new kennels so it can continue to offer a lifeline to thousands of homeless hounds.

If you would like to help Battersea pick up the tab for their shopping list, you can make a donation here.
