Rabbit Awareness Week 2014 Asks Owners to Make ‘One Small Hop’

09 May 2014

UK - Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW) 2014 kicks off on 10 May this year and organisers are asking pet rabbit owners to support this year’s awareness campaign by making ‘One Small Hop’ of change to their care routine for their rabbits, writes Gemma Hyland.

According to the PDSA, nearly two thirds of pet owners are unaware of the five key welfare needs of their pets.

These are the five things that all pets need to be healthy and happy. Which all pet owners now have a legal duty to provide.

The five welfare needs

  • Environment The need for a suitable environment (place to live)
  • Diet The need for a suitable diet
  • Behaviour The need to express normal behaviour
  • Companionship The need to live with, or apart from, other animals
  • Health The need to be protected from pain, suffering, injury and disease

This year’s RAW campaign, ‘One Small Hop’, looks to simplify the steps pet owners can take to improve rabbit welfare.

The campaign aims to educate and encourage bunny lovers to make one rabbit resolution to improve their bunnies’ health and wellbeing.

Vet practices will open their doors to the nation’s pet bunnies, with many offering free health checks.

Retailers will have educational events and in-store promotions. While rescue centres will host open days to help pet owners hop to it.

Dr Jane Tyson, scientific officer and RAW Spokesperson for the RSPCA, said: “With the number of RAW health checks taken up rising year-upon-year, RAW has extended health checks throughout the whole of May.

“This offers owners the opportunity to take advantage of a free health check for their rabbits, while receiving invaluable tips and advice from vets and vet nurses.

“At the same time, retailers will be offering in-store promotions and events, and rescue centres will be holding more open days than in any previous year.”

Pet owners can make their ‘One Small Hop’ pledges on Twitter using @rabbitawareness and #OneSmallHop.
