Do You Ride on a Towpath? Calls for National Policy

07 May 2014

UK - The Canal and River Trust has issued a consultation on the use of towpaths in order to create a National Towpath Use policy.

The policy aims to improve the experience for towpath users in England and Wales, and attract more visitors to share, use and enjoy the paths safely.

Riders are encouraged to view the consultation and submit their responses to the Canal and River Trust to make them aware of the demand for equestrian access on these routes.

Mark Weston, Director of Access, said: “Many towpaths are currently ridden and many more could easily be ridden. Towpaths can often be an ideal alternative to riding on heavily trafficked roads, and can also provide essential off road links to the fragmented equestrian rights of way network.”
