New Zealand Veterinarians Welcome Animal Testing Ban

08 May 2014

NEW ZEALAND - The New Zealand Veterinary Association (NZVA) welcomes Prime Minister John Key's ruling out of animal testing to determine the safety of legal psychoactive substances (legal highs).

In a statement NZVA said: "NZVA is against all animal testing unless it can be proven necessary - i.e. there is no validated scientific, research or genetic modelling alternative to using animals – and unless such testing is performed under the approval of, conditions set by and supervision of the an Animal Ethics Committee, as required by the Animal Welfare Act 1999.

"NZVA supports changes that affect animals in research, testing, and testing as proposed in the Animal Welfare Amendment Bill.

"Any research, testing, and teaching must be shown to have benefits to humans, animals and/or society that outweigh the costs to the animals involved. NZVA does not deem any psychoactive substance to have such benefit."
