New Blue Peter Guide Dog Puppy Marks 50th Anniversary

13 June 2014

UK - Blue Peter is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its first ever guide dog puppy appeal by welcoming a brand-new two-month-old trainee guide dog into the Blue Peter family.

The puppy will be introduced to Blue Peter viewers on next Thursday’s show and the flagship magazine programme will then follow its progress over the coming year as it undergoes a comprehensive training course to hopefully become a fully qualified guide dog.

In 1964 Blue Peter welcomed guide dog Honey to the team. She was puppy-walked by presenters Christopher Trace and Valerie Singleton for a year until she went into advanced training and in September 1966 she took her final guide dog assessment and passed with flying colours.

Now Blue Peter presenter Lindsey Russell is hoping she can encourage the latest addition to the Blue Peter team to do the same, and will be working with a puppy-walking family to help train the dog.

A series of films about the puppy’s training will be featured on Blue Peter throughout the year, and will be the latest in a run of features about working animals, including police dogs, dogs who help children with autism and dogs who have saved the lives of others.

Blue Peter Editor Ewan Vinnicombe said: “It’s great to be able to revisit a classic moment from Blue Peter’s history but bring it right up to date to make it relevant to our current audience. We’re looking forward to welcoming the new puppy into the team.”

Guide Dogs Chief Executive, Richard Leaman, added: “It is such a great honour to be working alongside the Blue Peter team again, we’re incredibly proud of every one of our life-changing guide dogs. I am confident that Lindsey’s time with her new recruit will show this generation of Blue Peter viewers exactly why our puppies are so special.”

Watch the Blue Peter puppy make its debut appearance in the Blue Peter studio this Thursday 19 June at 5.30pm on CBBC.

The name of the new puppy will also be revealed on the show, and the episode will be available for seven days after transmission on BBC iPlayer.
