Guide Dogs Calls for Safer Rulings on Electric Vehicles

31 July 2014

UK - Guide Dogs is calling for safer laws following this week's announcement that taxis and buses will switch to electric mode in busy parts of central London from 2018.

Guide Dogs said: "With increasing numbers of quiet vehicles on London's roads in the future, it's vital they are made safe for people with sight loss and other vulnerable road users.

"Electric and hybrid vehicles are 25 per cent more likely to injure a pedestrian than conventional vehicles and pose a huge risk to people who are blind or partially sighted. Imagine being on Oxford Street and trying to judge when it's safe to cross if you can neither see nor hear a car coming?

"We want all electric and hybrid cars fitted with an artificial engine noise to make them safer. At just £20 per vehicle, this is not a big ask. In fact it's only about the same price as a taxi fare from Boris's office in City Hall back to his house in Islington"
