07 August 2014

AUSTRALIA - ASAVA, a special interest group of the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) dedicated to veterinarians who primarily treat dogs and cats, will be holding one of the most significant annual events in the profession’s calendar on the Gold Coast 10-14 August.

Now in its 41st year, the ASAVA conference will bring together hundreds of people in the vet industry from throughout Australia and overseas for five days of presentations and workshops on the latest advances in ophthalmology, endocrinology and clinical pathology.

President of ASAVA, Dr Adrian Choi, said the conference will bring together two quality events under one roof as well as an exhibition.

“There’s a conference for vets as well as a veterinary nurses' conference and with an extensive exhibition supporting the veterinary industry you will be in touch with the latest products and services.

“We’re delighted to have some high calibre international and national speakers who are all leaders in their field,” Dr Choi said.

Speaker highlights include:

  • Professor David Maggs, an ophthalmologist from the USA, will provide an update on a range of ophthalmology topics including: ulcer management, blindness, dry eye, eyelid surgery, eye examinations, feline herpivirus, ophthalmic emergencies and treating red eye.
  • Dr Carmel Mooney is from Ireland, where her major research and teaching areas are in endocrine disorders of dogs and cats. Carmel will discuss the latest on pituitary and thyroid tumours as well as diabetes, cushing, addisons and feline hyperthyroidism.
  • Dr Stephen Yeomans and Dr Karen Jackson will cover the latest in clinical pathology including immune-mediated disorders, interpretation of routine biochemistry profiles and new diagnostic procedures for lymphoma and leukaemia.
