SPCA Seeks Information on Airgun Attack on Cat

28 August 2014

SCOTLAND, UK - The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after a cat was shot with an airgun in Dunfermline.

The SPCA was alerted after the cat, named Chubby, returned to Upper Steeland Farm with a pellet lodged between his shoulder blades on Thursday (21 August).

He was taken to a vets where the airgun pellet was successfully removed and is now recovering at home.

Senior Inspector Steven Gray said: "Chubby was fortunate not to sustain a severe injury as the shot narrowly missed his spine.

"This was an extremely cruel act and we would advise other cat owners in the area to be vigilant.

"Anyone who thinks it is acceptable to use an airgun in this way should not be in possession of such a dangerous weapon.

"We welcome the Scottish Government's proposal to introduce an airgun licensing scheme as we believe this will help prevent horrific attacks like this.

"The scheme would ensure that only those with a lawful reason are allowed to own an airgun and it would also help the police trace anyone using an airgun irresponsibly."

Anyone with information is being urged to contact our animal helpline on 03000 999 999.
