Scales Are Set for Pet Slimmer of the Year 2014

15 October 2014

UK - As many as 50 per cent of pets now classed as overweight, with more than 10 million pets receiving fatty treats, due to owners sharing their own unhealthy eating habits with their pets.

PDSA research shows that around nine out of ten owners (87 per cent) give pets treats, despite the fact that 91 per cent realise the resulting obesity can reduce their pet’s lifespan.

Around 2.5 million dogs (one in three) and over two million cats (one in four) are currently overweight and, not only could they have their lives cut short, they will also have a drastically reduced quality of life in some cases.

However, beating the bulge can be a big challenge and pet slimming success is something which Hill’s Pet Nutrition believes should be rewarded.

This is why the company launched its Pet Slimmer of the Year 2014 competition – to help owners achieve their animal’s weight goals and to say well done for taking the big step for doing something positive for their pet.

Even as little as 20 per cent extra weight can increase the risk of serious conditions such as diabetes, joint disease, heart conditions and breathing problems in pets with those of a healthy weight living longer, happier lives.

In fact, obesity is now the number one health condition in cats and dogs, making it more important than ever for owners to stay savvy when it comes to keeping their pets on the ‘slim’ and narrow.

Maintaining a healthy weight for pets is an endeavour which is at the centre of Hill’s nutritional philosophy and something which the company is committed to helping owners achieve at every opportunity.

The competition will see one deserving dog and cat who have overcome the odds to shed the pounds be selected from 16 regional winners to be crowned champion.

The two overall winners will receive a whopping £1000 worth of Love2Shop vouchers to spend at over 20,000 high street stores, plus a year’s supply of Hill’s pet food.

The 16 regional finalists will also win £150 worth of Love2Shop vouchers as well as a two month supply of Hill’s Prescription Diet Metabolic food and an exclusive toy to help keep pets playful and active.

Eight regional winners have already been chosen during the first judging phase, with the remaining eight still up for grabs.

All participating pet owners will automatically receive a free starter pack, with successful pet slimmers being rewarded with the sought-after congratulatory goody bag worth £49.

Entries close on October 31st, so owners who want to be in with a chance at achieving champion status in the slimming stakes should arrange a visit at their local vet practice now to discuss their pet’s personalised weight loss programme and to register their interest in the competition.
