Half of Us Greet Pets Before Partners

06 November 2014

UK - Research by Blue Cross shows that half of us greet our pets before our partners and 35 per cent of owners trust their pet with a secret that they don’t reveal to partners, family or friends.

Fifty-seven per cent of rabbit owners confessed they turn to their pet to tell them something they don’t want to tell anyone else, according to a Blue Cross poll.

Fiona Cooke, Blue Cross Assistant Animal Behaviourist said: "I'm not completely surprised to discover rabbits are our closest confidante, their huge ears encourage us to tell them our darkest secrets!

“For most of us, owning a pet means so much more than just having an animal in the home. As this survey shows, they are a huge part of the family and our lives wouldn't be the same without them."

The pet pals survey also revealed:

  • Half of us greet their pet before any other family member when returning home
  • 44 per cent of cat owners admit to using the bathroom in front of their pet
  • Over a third of owners confessed their pet had interrupted their love life more than once

Although the results shows that pets are usually a treasured member of the household, Blue Cross cares for thousands of unwanted and abandoned animals every year.
