Fifty Cats Euthanised After Rabies Case

24 November 2014

US - 50 cats have been euthanised in Delaware following confirmation of rabies.

A four-week old kitten tested positive for rabies, which led to the other cats being euthanised after the owner could provide no evidence that they were vaccinated.

Rabies is a disease that is easily spread and always fatal in animals and can be fatal in humans if they do not receive immediate preventive treatment after a potential exposure.

At this time there are no known bites or exposures to humans from any of these cats.

Rabies is endemic in Delaware and residents are advised to keep their pets' rabies vaccinations up to date and to avoid wild or unfamiliar animals.

Of 126 animals tested since January 2014, eight including the kitten tested positive.
