Dogs Trust Adoptee Saves Family from Burglary

UK - Just three weeks after she first joined the Alliott home from Dogs Trust Harefield, 10 month old Lurcher Imogen alerted her owner to a burglar in the house.

Normally not one to bark, Imogen became unsettled one Sunday evening and soon it became clear why.

When Kate went downstairs she was surprised by how cold it was, only to see that the door to the kitchen was now wide open.

Closer inspection saw that the garden gate was also open and Imogen wasn’t calming down.

Deciding to investigate Kate, with Imy by her side, found that an unknown young man was on her scooter and about to disappear into the night. He ran off when approached.

Kate said: “I dread to think of what the thieves might have taken if Imogen hadn’t been around. I don’t think I would have even known they’d been in the house until the following morning if it hadn’t been for her. She has always been very vigilant and protective of us, and she demonstrated this almost straight away after we brought her home.

"On that occasion it was just a pigeon that had flown into the house and knocked over a vase. Obviously the break-in was far more distressing. CCTV footage that the police obtained showed there had been two men in my house My daughter and I feel so much safer having Imy with us. I don't want to imagine what could have happened if Imogen hadn’t been there. She really is mine and my daughter’s super-dog!”

Says Richard Moore, Dogs Trust Harefield Rehoming Centre Manager: “We think all of our dogs are super-dogs but Imogen has gone one step further to demonstrate why she deserves this title! We often say that dogs bring so much to our lives and it is safe to say that Imogen can now add security services to her list of skills!

"We’re relieved that Kate and her daughter Grace weren’t hurt during the break-in and thankful that any potential plans the burglars had were cut short after Imogen detected them in her house. She has proved herself to be a great asset to the Alliott house.”
