Man Arrested on Suspicion of Dog Fighting After Channel 4 Documentary

28 November 2014

UK - A man from Handsworth, Birmingham, has been arrested following a joint investigation between the RSPCA and West Midlands Police into organised dog fighting, following a Channel 4 documentary.

The man was arrested during a warrant carried out at 7am on Monday, 24 November, on suspicion of conspiracy to organise illegal dog fighting.

He has been interviewed and bailed pending further enquiries.

Chief Inspector Ian Briggs, from our special operations unit, said: "This warrant was the latest part of the RSPCA’s ongoing investigations into organised dog fighting. It came directly on the back of information obtained following the documentary ‘Going To The Dogs’ which was aired on Channel 4 earlier this year.

“We are grateful to West Midlands Police for assisting us with this operation.

Vile spectacle of dog fighting

When the documentary aired in June, there was widespread public outcry which we echoed.

It appeared in parts glamorise the vile spectacle of dog fighting and reveal a number of tips that any novice dog fighter may find useful.

In response, the RSPCA launched a campaign action and almost 10,000 people wrote to Channel 4 demanding that they hand over the unedited footage from the documentary; and reveal the identities of those involved to us or police.
