Seven Puppies Found Abandoned in Bucket at Christmas

31 December 2014

UK - Seven tiny puppies found heartlessly dumped on the side of a road in a laundry bucket have been rescued and are in the care of the Battersea Dogs Home Old Windsor team.

The seven week old Mongrel pups were brought to our Berkshire centre by a concerned member of the public, and staff fear they may have been bred as Christmas presents but failed to sell. With no food or water and filthy coats, the puppies were scared and cold.

Battersea Old Windsor’s Centre Manager Kaye Mughal said: “The puppies were found on the side of a country road in a bucket, so it’s very obvious they were dumped deliberately.

“Given the timing we’re worried they were bred as Christmas presents by someone looking to make a quick buck, but when they failed to sell they were disposed of.

“Dumping animals without food or water near a road could have disastrous consequences, but thankfully a member of the public acted quickly, and they’re now recovering from their ordeal and are looking for new homes.”

Battersea has had an influx of pre-Christmas puppies this year with 14 puppies arriving, all under the age of 12 weeks.

This includes a 10-week-old Mongrel, a 14-week-old Rottweiler, a five-month-old Labrador, and four five-month-old Staffordshire Bull Terriers.

Head of Operations at Battersea, Carly Whyborn said: “Many of these puppies are being brought to Battersea for the right reasons, but others are cruelly dumped over Christmas. We pick up the pieces when people buy pets as presents.”

Ms Whyborn added: “For those who can be truly committed to a puppy and give it the time and training required, we have plenty of fun-loving pups who will make fantastic additions to good homes. They may not have had the best start in life, but Battersea will make sure 2015 sees a change in their fortunes.”

The dogs’ home has been inundated with enquiries from people wishing to give a home to one of these puppies. However, it says it has hundreds of dogs of all ages still waiting for their new homes.
