Show Your Pets Some Extra Love Today

20 February 2015

ANALYSIS - Loving your pet goes without saying, so it's only right that there is a whole day dedicated to just that! Today (20th February) is National Love Your Pet Day, writes Gemma Hyland.

While the origins of this day are unknown, it's the perfect excuse for pampering your pet with a little extra love and affection.

dog heartIt is estimated that 13 million (45 per cent of) UK households have pets. In the US approximately 39 per cent of households own at least one dog, and 33 per cent own at least one cat.

Anybody who currently owns animals will be able to tell you how their lives have been changed.

A study of over 2,000 UK pet owners has revealed that around 90 per cent (87 per cent) of those surveyed claim to be happier as a result of owning a pet and around half (48 per cent) believe that spending time with their pet reduces their stress levels.

Other findings include:

  • A quarter of UK pets have their own seat in the living room
  • 7 per cent have their own bedroom
  • 4 per cent of UK pets have their own Twitter or Facebook profile

In return for your pets loyalty, why not treat your dog to an extra long walk today, or reward your cat with a grooming session or a new toy.

Finding a pet

Love Your Pet Day is a great way to highlight the benefits that come with owning a pet, so if you are currently considering a new addition to your family - bearing in mind the responsibility - why not visit your local animal sanctuary or find your nearest RSPCA branch.
