UK - A new poll of cat owners has found that 59 per cent who had allowed their cat to have kittens would not choose to do so again.

Battersea Dogs and Cats Home (BDCH) is urging owners to have their male and female cats neutered to prevent unwanted litters and also to help safeguard the health and welfare of their pet.

The poll also found:

  • Almost a third (29 per cent) of all the owners who had already experienced their pet having a litter of kittens said they found it harder than they imagined it would be.
  • Many people found giving up the kittens the most challenging thing to do, with more than half of people surveyed (51 per cent) experiencing difficulty in finding good homes for them, while 43 per cent said saying goodbye to the new kittens was hard.
  • Worrying about the mother cat during her pregnancy worried 29 per cent of people while 26 per cent found the veterinary costs difficult.
  • A quarter of cat owners surveyed chose to keep their kittens but most found them homes with people they know. Sadly 12 per cent had to rely on rescue centres to rehome the kittens.
