Horse Owners: Are You Ready for Summer?

11 May 2015
TEXT HERE

UK - With the longer evenings and daffodils in full bloom, spring is finally here! Sally Foskett, Horse Welfare Coordinator for the The Blue Cross Midlands has created a handy check list, to help you make sure you and your horse are ready for summer.

Ten things you might need to get ready for the better weather!

  • Spring health checks – are your horse’s flu and Tetanus vaccinations up to date? Do you need to worm/egg count and is the farrier booked in?
  • Weigh tape – use weigh tape fortnightly through those tricky weight gain months
  • Electric fencing to restrict grazing – is your battery charged? Do you have sufficient tape and posts?
  • Fly spray and garlic powder– to help keep the flies away
  • Grazing muzzle – if necessary and if they keep it on! There are lots of types on the market. Try introducing this gradually to your horse if they are not used to wearing one.
  • Sweet itch treatment and rug– stay one step ahead if your horse suffers from sweet itch
  • Factor 50 sun block for pink noses – apply daily to prevent sunburn
  • Shampoo – to wash away all the winter mud
  • Fly net – make sure it is properly fitted so it doesn’t rub and that your horse is used to wearing it before turning out
  • Nose net – these can be useful if your horse is irritated by pollen. Again, introduce gradually if they aren’t used to it.
