US Votes to Continue Allowing Horse Slaughter for Human Consumption

10 July 2015

US - The US House Appropriations Committee has failed to adopt an amendment to prevent the slaughter of horses for human consumption on US soil.

The amendment to the agriculture appropriations bill, offered by Representative Sam Farr, resulted in a tie vote, with the Chair of the Committee, Hal Rogers, ultimately failing to adopt the provision.

The Senate Appropriations Committee is expected to consider a similar amendment, and The Humane Society of the US has urged it to pass the measure and prevent the use of American tax dollars for this cruel practice.

Michael Markarian, chief program and policy officer for The Humane Society of the United States, said: “The horse slaughter industry is a predatory, inhumane enterprise. They don't ‘euthanise’ old horses, but precisely the opposite: they buy up young and healthy horses, often by misrepresenting their intentions, and kill them to sell the meat to Europe and Japan.”
