Do You Really Understand What Your Rabbits Need?

15 July 2015

UK - There is a big problem in the UK with the impulse buying of pets, especially when children pester their parents to buy them one. However, people should be putting more thought into the costs and responsibility of owning pets before they go out and buy them, said vet and author Emma Milne.

Speaking to ThePetSite about her new Pet Detective book series, Ms Milne stated that there are currently many problems with pet buying and keeping and many pets are suffering due to the lack of knowledge about how to keep them and what makes them happy.

For example, did you know that rabbits should never be kept on their own? They actually hate being alone and should always be kept with at least one other rabbit.

This is a clear example about how many pet owners do not fully understand the needs of their pets, nor how to make sure their pets are happy.

Again, the traditional small rabbit hutch that many people keep their rabbit(s) in does not provide your rabbit(s) with enough space and can lead to health problems, as well as making your pet unhappy.

In her new book, 'Are Rabbits the Right Pet for You: Can You Find the Facts', Ms Milne explores a variety of areas of rabbit ownership including feed, health, welfare, behaviour and environment, providing up to date knowledge and facts on responsible ownership.

Aimed at children and their parents, the book offers a fun way to find out about what you need to do and should expect from owning a rabbit in order to try and help stop the impulse buying of pets and to improve pet rabbits' welfare.
