ISPCA Offering Free Dog Microchipping During September

17 September 2015

IRELAND - The ISPCA is offering free or discounted microchipping at its National Animal Centre during the whole of September.

Microchipping will be free to anyone who has proof of social welfare benefits, and at the reduced rate of €10 for everyone else.

From 1 September 2015 it became a legal requirement for all puppies 12 weeks old to be microchipped, and will be a requirement for all dogs by March 2016 so do not wait.

You must book your place in advance by calling the ISPCA reception desk on 043 33 25035 or by emailing

Microchipping is now universally recognised as the most effective way to have your adored pet made permanently identifiable.

The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and is painlessly inserted under the skin of an animal by a vet or vet nurse.

The chip stores a number which is unique to your pet and which can be read by an electronic scanner.

You will have to remember to register your details with the provider of the microchip and to keep them updated if you move house or change your number.

If your details are not up to date, it will not be possible to contact you in the event that your pet is found.
