09 February 2016

UK - Cats Protection is on the prowl for entries for its National Cat Awards 2016 where the finalists will go whisker-to-whisker to become National Cat of the Year.

Now in its eighth year, the competition is open to all living cats in the UK and celebrates the achievements of the country's fearless felines and miraculous moggies.

Nominations for the awards, which once again are being sponsored by Purina®, open on Monday 1 February and owners have until Friday 29 April to nominate their cat for one of the following categories:

  • Hero Cat – Cats that save the day
  • Most Caring Cat – Cats that positively impact a person’s health or wellbeing
  • Furr-ever Friends – Tales of friendship between children and cats
  • Outstanding Rescue Cat – Fabulous felines adopted from animal charities
  • Purina® Better Together – Celebrating the special bond that has transformed and enriched the lives of both a feline and human

Awards organiser Kate Bunting said: “We’ve all heard about what amazing things cats can do to enhance people’s lives such as raising the alarm over gas leaks, burglars and even detecting cancer - as well as providing comfort during other difficult circumstances. We’re really looking forward to receiving lots more fantastic feline tales and finding the UK’s top cat.”

The winning moggies, and the overall National Cat of the Year, will be announced at a glamorous awards ceremony at London's Savoy Hotel on Thursday 4 August, kindly funded by Purina®and hosted by the 'Voice of the Balls' on BBC1’s National Lottery TV programmes, Alan Dedicoat.

Each winner will receive a trophy, a pet-store voucher, a year’s subscription to Cats Protection’s The Cat magazine and a three-month supply of Purina® cat food.

The event will be attended by celebrity judges who will present the awards and pay tribute to the nation’s top cats.

“I’m very much looking forward to participating in this year’s awards,” said actress and singer Carley Stenson who judged the Hero Cat category in 2014.

“Cats enhance their owners’ lives in so many ways and I’ll have a tissue handy as the stories are always so touching!”

The winner of this year’s National Cat Awards will inherit the title from previous winner Nelson, a one-eyed former stray from Seaton, County Durham, who survived near-drowning and 15 years living rough.
