Are You a Scout? Then Guide Dogs Has an Amazing Competition for You!

13 April 2016

UK - Shouting out to artistic Scouts everywhere! Are you creative and love design? Then the charity Guide Dogs has an exciting new competition for you.

We want your help to create a brand new Discovery Den, that will help other young people understand what it's like to live with sight loss.

Housed in a large exhibition van, the Discovery Den will tour schools and youth groups far and wide, spreading the word about the charity Guide Dogs' life changing work - making sure that when someone loses their sight, they don't lose their freedom as well.

The competition celebrates Guide Dogs teaming up with The Scout Association as part of the A Million Hands campaign. Entering this competition is a great example of how Scouts can take action on one of the biggest issues the UK faces today.

Launched in October 2015, A Million Hands is designed to get the UK's half a million Scouts doing more to tackle four social issues - disability, mental health, dementia and access to clean water and sanitation.

If you're a Scout of any age and you want to flex your creative muscle, then you can enter the competition online at

We want your ideas for what should feature both inside and on the outside of the van. Once the competition closes at 11:59pm on Sunday, 15 May, a panel of judges including TV presenter and broadcaster Nick Knowles will choose a lucky winner.

If your design wins, you'll get to work with Guide Dogs' designers to see your ideas turned into reality. You'll also enjoy a VIP trip to one of Guide Dogs' training schools with your group, where you'll meet adorable guide dogs in training.

Nick Knowles

Nick said: "I'm proud to be judging Guide Dogs' Discovery Den competition for the Scouts. I'm calling on Scouts of all ages to think about what the world feels like for someone with sight loss.

"Can you design a travelling Discovery Den that will awaken the senses and help young people to explore what it feels to have sight loss? Put your creative thinking caps on and let your imaginations soar. There could be shows, activities or blindfolded challenges in the den. It should be fun and exciting and above all, unforgettable! Happy designing!"

Jack Abrey, Chair of The Scout Association's Community Impact Group, which is leading the A Million Hands campaign, said: "Across the UK, Scouts are taking action on some of the biggest issues facing society today through our A Million Hands campaign. Through this competition Scouts can help design the Guide Dogs Discovery Den, helping even more people understand about disability and how we can make a difference."
