Rabbit Owners Warned About New Deadly Virus in UK

21 July 2016

UK - Rabbit owners are being warned about a new variant of rabbit haemorrhage disease (RHDV2) that has arrived in the UK and has no vaccine.

The highly contagious and deadly disease affects both wild and domestic (pet) rabbits and has already spread throughout mainland Europe.

The virus is easily spread through contact with contaminated hay, water, bird droppings, humans or other rabbits. The virus may also be air-borne.

According to the British Rabbit Council, this new strain of rabbit haemorrhage disease does not show any of the usual symptoms, making it hard to detect.

Death is thought to occur 3–9 days after infection.

While no vaccine is available in the UK, a vaccine can be imported from France and Spain.
